Monarda bradburiana, tray of 50 plugs

The straight species Monarda bradburiana is an under-appreciated Bee Balm that is as valuable and attractive in drifts in the perennial border as it is forming colonies in a wild or naturalized setting. Shorter and sturdier than its more familiar cousins, Monarda bradburiana blooms several weeks earlier than Monarda fistulosa, with perfectly globular clusters of diminutive light pink to lavender tubular flowers (planted from seed, color can vary). Fragrant flowers are a magnet for hummingbirds, butterflies, bees, and other pollinators. Leave the spherical seed heads for a long season of attractive presence and food for small songbirds. This flat contains 50 plant plugs, each 2" wide x 5" deep.

Monarda is a North American genus that has several species, all of which share tartly fragrant foliage and square stems that typify members of the Mint family. The flower heads are hemispheres of tubular blooms in brilliant colors that present a feast of nectar for pollinators including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds in mid- to late-summer. Plants thrive in full sun or partial shade and evenly moist soil. Under these conditions, they will gladly fill any available space but are easily pulled where unwanted and transplant readily.
