Neem meal is the byproduct of cold pressing neem seeds for oil production. When applied directly to the soil neem meal will have a variety of great effects, particularly eradicating fungus gnats without the need for soil drenching.
These benefits include adding a valuable full profile slow release fertiliser to the soil, it will help unlock nutrients and stop nitrogen from leaching from your soil and repel unwanted pests with its high levels of Azadirachtin (the active consistuent of neem oil).
How to use as a fungus gnat repellent:
- Fork a small amount through the top 2cm of soil (approximately 1/2 teaspoon for a 12cm pot, 1 teaspoon for a 20cm pot etc). Becuase the gnats lay thier larvae in the top 2cm or so of soil, this will form a deterrent to them getting into the soil, whilst adding organic matter and not shifting the pH etc.
Use at 1/2 to 1 cup per square metre if using outdoors as a fertilizer.
