A handsome early 20th century National cash register produced for export to markets using the francs and centimes currency system, including France, Belgium, and Switzerland. The ornate cast brass case displays a warm golden-brown patina with richly molded foliate scrolls and floral ornament, the front bearing the National name in relief. The glazed display reads in francs and centimes, while rows of round key caps with numbers and letters create a pleasing visual rhythm across the mechanism. This is a counter model without a drawer, designed to sit atop a shop counter. The mechanism is not currently functional, and a metal band appears to be missing along the lower section, but the register retains its strong visual impact and commanding presence.

Founded in Dayton, Ohio, the National Cash Register Company achieved international renown in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for its finely engineered and richly ornamented machines. Special export models were produced for different currencies and languages, allowing merchants abroad to use the same reliable mechanisms adapted to local monetary systems. The elaborately cast brass cases were stamped and chased by hand, creating the crisp ornamental details seen here.
