An elegant pair of Italian Medici urns in cast iron from the 19th century, finished in a deep bronze-toned patina. Each campana-form vessel presents an everted lip with an egg-and-dart border, a gadrooned collar at the waist, and sculpted ram’s head handles, all raised on a turned socle and square plinth. The surfaces show a pleasing matte sheen that reads as bronze. Nicely proportioned and well balanced, the pair is in very good condition with a timeworn patina, scattered minor abrasions, small areas of light oxidation consistent with age and outdoor use, and minor losses to the horns of the ram’s head handles.

Inspired by the celebrated antique marble urn in the Uffizi, Medici models became essential to neoclassical taste and the Grand Tour tradition. Italian foundries of the 19th century produced these in sand-cast iron, often hand finished and patinated to emulate bronze while offering durability for terraces and gardens. The ram’s head motif, a classical emblem associated with pastoral and Bacchic imagery, brings a scholarly note, while the crisp gadrooning and disciplined silhouette speak to the period’s reverence for classical antiquity and measured proportion.
