Pair of Cobalt Blue Art Nouveau Enamelled Vases by Legras c. 1900 - 13¾"

Rising in tall, graceful lines, this pair of Art Nouveau vases in richly saturated cobalt glass, France, circa 1900, is attributed to Legras. Each slender, tapering body opens into an expressive ruffled rim, while the deep blue ground glows beneath finely hand-enamelled sprays of muguet and meadow grasses in white, pale pink, and soft green, touched with discreet gilt highlights. The luminous glass beautifully complements the delicate polychrome enamel, creating a vivid interplay of light and color. Condition is very good, with only gentle rubbing to the gilding at the necks and no visible chips or cracks.

The naturalistic floral motif and fluid silhouette speak to the Belle Époque’s embrace of flora and movement. François-Théodore Legras (1839–1916) and his Saint-Denis ateliers were celebrated for their richly colored glass enhanced with fired enamel, a savoir-faire that yielded durable, painterly decoration with raised detail and subtle stippling. Lily of the valley, long associated with spring and good fortune in France, was a cherished theme in French Art Nouveau glass, and the ruffled lip and waisted profile seen here are characteristic of 1900s Legras production.
