Pair of French Art Nouveau Bronze-Mounted Barbotine Jardinières - 8¼"

This pair of French bronze-mounted ceramic jardinières dates from around 1900. Each presents a bulbous, slightly tapered body with an undulating, scalloped rim and richly molded tulip blossoms in relief, their whiplash stems curling gracefully across a deep green ground with a pale celadon interior. The vessels rest in cast bronze mounts with pierced scrolling and foliate feet, combining strength with decorative refinement. One bronze mount retains a later layer of paint, while the other displays a rich, amber gold patina.

These jardinières reflect the Art Nouveau taste for natural forms and sinuous line, where tulips, irises, and lilies were favored motifs. Barbotine decoration, a raised slip technique used extensively by French makers such as Orchies, Sarreguemines, and Saint-Clément, allowed sculptural petals and leaves to emerge from the glaze with saturated color. Bronze mounting was a Parisian savoir-faire that elevated ceramic wares into decorative objets for bourgeois interiors, and cache-pots like these were intended for flowering bulbs or seasonal plants on mantels and sideboards during the Belle Époque.
