Pair of Large Vintage Green Glazed Anduze Garden Urns - 32¼"

A large matching pair of French Anduze garden urns, handmade by the Poterie de la Madeleine approximately forty years ago and bearing the workshop’s mark. Their classic baluster form is finished in a deep emerald-green glaze, now beautifully weathered after decades outdoors. The surface is richly varied, with fine crazing, tonal shifts, rubbing and scattered losses that reveal flashes of warm terracotta beneath. Applied swags, medallions and molded bands follow the traditional Anduze vocabulary, while the naturally evolved patina gives the pair a depth and character well beyond their relatively recent date. They are pierced for drainage.

The Poterie de la Madeleine is known for preserving the traditional artisanal methods associated with the Anduze pot, a form rooted in centuries of southern French garden culture. Each vessel is individually made through a multi-stage process, resulting in subtle variations from one piece to another. Although the pottery also produces deliberately aged finishes, the wear on this pair has developed naturally through prolonged garden use, giving the glaze an especially authentic, softly timeworn surface. 

With their generous proportions and saturated green glaze, these urns embody the spirit of the classic French garden. They are particularly well suited to topiary, citrus or young olive trees and would bring strong architectural rhythm to an entrance, terrace or garden axis. Their mottled surfaces also make them equally appealing in a more relaxed setting, where the variations in glaze and exposed terracotta introduce warmth and texture.
