Pair of Late 19th Century French Cast-Iron Chambord Style Planters - 17" x 28"

A handsome pair of substantial French cast-iron garden urns in the classic Chambord shape, dating to the late 19th century, featuring broad circular bowls on waisted socles and square plinth bases. The rims are encircled with bold gadrooning, echoed on the lower bowls, while twin side handles curl outward in lively scrolls adorned with floral and shell motifs. Later green paint has aged gracefully, flaking in areas to reveal traces of an earlier white layer and creating a richly textured, timeworn surface.

These garden urns follow the celebrated French cast iron tradition that flourished in the second half of the 19th century, when foundries popularized models inspired by Renaissance architecture at the Château de Chambord and classical garden ornament. The sculptural handles with volutes and shells echo Rococo tastes, while the heavy castings reflect the industrial prowess of French foundries of the period.
