Pair of Very Large Canvas Panels w/ Floral Décor c. 1900 - 76½" x 39½"

This pair of French painted decorative panels on canvas, circa 1900, is tall and slender in architectural scale. Each panel presents a pale blue ground within an ivory border framed by a gilt trompe-l’œil cartouche with a scalloped base and corner volutes, suggesting the framework of an ornate window. One panel depicts a climbing spray of soft pink roses, while the other shows cascading lilac-like blossoms with feathery fern fronds, both rendered in delicate pastel tones that evoke views opening onto clear skies and blooming gardens. One panel is artist-signed with the initials F.A. The surfaces display pronounced craquelure with light toning and small edge abrasions, enhancing their timeworn, decorative character. One panel is very slightly taller than the other.

These works belong to the Belle Époque tradition of panel painting, combining Louis XVI revival cartouches with floral naturalism that also informed early Art Nouveau. Created by "décorateurs" workshops for salons and bedrooms, such canvases were conceived to be set into boiserie or hung as portable wall enrichments. Their trompe-l’œil design blurs the boundary between architecture and nature, giving the impression of windows opening onto an endless spring.
