Pellegrino Mario's #1 Fig

Pellegrino Mario’s #1 is a fig that originally comes from Italy. It was part of the collection of well-known fig grower, Mario DiNatale. This variety has a long, oval shape. Many have compared it to Longue d’Aout. The brebas and main crop figs are both large and can weigh up to 80 grams. These large figs are covered in colorful red, purple, yellow, and brown skin. The skin is soft, creamy, and really delicious to eat. Pellegrino figs have syrupy red pulp that is berry and honey flavored with moderate sweetness. The delicious fruit is syrupy with honey in the center. A closed eye helps Pellegrino figs to resist spoilage and pests. 

Once the trees begin producing, they can usually keep the figs coming for about a month straight. The trees are vigorous growers with an open growth pattern that scatters the crown of the tree with pretty leaves. Pellegrino leaves have very long fingers with wavy, and serrated margins. The unique leaves are an attractive addition to the backyard! 

Mario named this variety after his best friend who passed away. The tree originally belonged to that friend, and Mario cared for it after his passing. Pellegrino was the fig that kicked off the numbering system in Mario’s well-known collection and was known as #1. It is said that the variety originally comes from the Caserta region of Italy.

When do we ship cuttings?

Non-Rooted Cuttings(November/December):

We begin to ship cuttings once the trees are dormant and in a shippable state. Exact timing is weather dependent, but we usually start in November. Shipping continues throughout the winter and early spring. We stop shipping when the trees begin to break dormancy, normally around mid-March.

**All non-rooted cuttings ship between November and March regardless of the date selected during checkout. Orders placed during our pre-sale period(October/November) will ship out first in November/December. If you are rooting your cuttings in the spring, our cuttings can be kept in the refrigerator until you are ready to root them. They will be perfectly fine. That is what we do and they've turned into our most impressive trees.

Rooted Cuttings(Spring):

We begin shipping rooted cuttings once they are mature enough to ship. The shipping period typically begins late April and continues into June. Regardless of the date you select during checkout, we will ship when ready during that span. Please do not ask for ETA's or specific arrival dates. You will receive an email when your order ships with UPS Ground tracking details.
