Petite Castelnaudary Urn-Form Jardinière, Mid-20th Century - 8"

A petite green-glazed terracotta jardinière from Castelnaudary, dating from the early to mid-20th century. A compact interpretation of the classic urn form, it features a gently swelling body, broad flared rim, twin loop handles, a pronounced waist, and a short pedestal foot, with simple incised bands highlighting its graceful silhouette. Finished in a vibrant apple-green glaze with natural speckling and lively tonal variation, the jardinière is pierced at the base for drainage. It displays attractive age-related wear, including small glaze losses and fritting along the rim, handles, and foot, together with minor firing marks and surface scuffs. These signs of use reveal the warm terracotta beneath and contribute to its authentic patina.

Renowned for its glazed earthenware, Castelnaudary in Southwestern France produced pottery for both the home and garden, combining practical function with timeless forms. This miniature jardinière recalls the larger planters that made the town famous, supplying country estates and formal gardens with elegant vessels for citrus trees and topiary.
