Petite Italian Sgraffito Pottery Vase by Dante Milani, 1930s - 11"

This petite art pottery vase was produced by the Dante Milani workshop in Montopoli Val d'Arno, Italy, during the 1930s. The rounded earthenware body rises to a short flared neck framed by a pair of elegant loop handles with softly scrolling terminals. Hand-incised geometric bands and stylized floral motifs, highlighted in deep green and dark brown against a warm ochre ground, enrich the surface, which has been intentionally rubbed and antiqued to evoke the character of an older vessel. The base bears a hand-incised inscription including Montopoli, together with indistinct lettering, a factory model number, and what appears to be the artisan's monogram. The vase remains in very good condition, with minor rubbing around the foot that blends naturally with its intentionally antiqued finish. 

Founded around 1920, the Dante Milani workshop helped establish Montopoli as an important center for Italian art pottery. From the early 1920s onward, Milani became known for reviving ancient Etruscan and Roman decorative traditions through finely executed sgraffito, a technique in which designs are hand-carved before glazing. These richly textured wares enjoyed international success during the interwar years and remain among the workshop's most collectible productions today. 

Whether displayed on its own or filled with dried branches or seasonal foliage, this vase brings a warm, rustic presence to a console, mantel, or open shelf. Its richly incised decoration and softly antiqued finish celebrate the enduring appeal of traditional folk pottery, lending a collected feel to any interior.
