Petite Spanish folk art donkey sculpture, woven in tightly braided esparto grass with integral pannier saddle bags and a simple twine halter. The natural straw tone is enlivened by a jaunty fringe of red, yellow, and green wool around the neck and bags. Likely made in southern or southeastern Spain, mid 20th century, it shows the hand of a skilled basket maker in the trenzado pleita construction. Condition is very good, with light fraying to a few fiber ends and gentle, age-appropriate wear to the yarn decoration, a rustic presence overall.

Esparto, the resilient Mediterranean grass Stipa tenacissima, underpinned traditional Spanish basketry for centuries, supplying cordage, mats, and market baskets from Almería to Murcia and Alicante.
