Phlox stolonifera 'Blue Ridge'

Carpet shady woodlands or the spring garden with the generously sized, lilac-blue blossoms of Phlox stolonifera 'Blue Ridge.' This Creeping Phlox attracts pollinators, including hummingbirds, who will appreciate the early supply of nectar. Plants form dense mats of evergreen to semi-evergreen foliage, and they will gradually form a colony.

Phlox stolonifera (Creeping Phlox) is native to the Appalachian Mountains. In spring, it carpets shady and partly shaded woodland areas and the banks of streams with flowers. The loose clusters of tubular, scented blossoms are held aloft like miniature bouquets on 6–8” stems. The carefree plants spread gradually to form weed-smothering mats. Their rounded leaves generally top out around 3” tall and serve as an attractive year-round ground cover. Creeping Phlox is an enchanting and low-maintenance addition to woodland and shade gardens.

The varied, versatile, and indispensable Phlox genus includes almost 70 species of perennials and annuals. The majority of these low-maintenance plants are native to North America where they can be found in a range of habitats from woodlands and meadows to rocky alpine areas. All have tubular flowers that attract hummingbirds, hummingbird moths (also called hawk moths), bees, and butterflies. Most have a spicy vanilla-clove perfume that delights us as well.
