Poetic Mid-20th-Century Italian Marine Composition - 40¼" x 29½"

This large framed marine composition, Italian and likely mid-20th century, presents a dried black seaweed-like frond carefully mounted on an ivory card and accented with a cluster of iridescent shells arranged like a small bouquet at its base. The mount is laid out in the manner of an antique scientific plate, with hand-ruled ochre and terracotta borders and a handwritten cartouche at the lower left reading “Composizione marina / Prof. Moroni / Via Tornabuoni 3 / Firenze,” giving both title and Florentine address. Near the upper right margin a tiny printed donkey silhouette appears, most likely a whimsical printer’s or artist’s device that adds a discreet, playful note. The whole is set in a substantial wooden frame with stepped black and gilt moldings, the surface showing attractively worn edges and scattered losses. The reverse is backed with old Italian printed sheets pasted over a wooden panel, further supporting a mid-century Italian origin and giving the piece the feel of something assembled in a small studio or teaching atelier.

This piece brings an immediate sense of texture and quiet drama to a room, the filigree silhouette and shimmering shells creating a sculptural depth that reads beautifully from across a space.
