Rare French Bouteille de la Passion w/ Straw Marquetry, - 14¼"

A rare French bouteille de la Passion, also known as a bouteille de patience (patience bottle), dating from the late 19th century. Encased within the clear glass bottle is an extraordinarily intricate miniature Calvary scene in delicate straw marquetry, painstakingly assembled around a central Cross bearing the INRI plaque and surrounded by the traditional Instruments of Christ's Passion. The elaborate stopper, with its unusually long neck extending deep into the bottle, is similarly wrapped in finely executed straw work and crowned by an acorn finial. The underside bears the inscription "Juste Soler, Bourg (Ain)," likely identifying the maker, owner, or recipient in the Bourg-en-Bresse region. The glass remains clear with only light clouding, while the remarkably intricate interior is beautifully preserved. The stopper displays minor rubbing and small losses consistent with age.

Bouteilles de la Passion belong to the long European tradition of patience work, devotional objects whose countless individual elements were meticulously introduced and assembled through the narrow neck of the bottle using specially adapted tools. Created as demonstrations of both faith and extraordinary manual dexterity, they were produced throughout the 19th century in a variety of settings, from convents and monasteries to workshops, ships, military barracks, and even prisons.
