Renegade Red Clover is an early-flowering, double-cut red clover selected for vigorous forage and cover-crop growth. This short-lived perennial legume develops an upright canopy and is noted for improved resistance to southern anthracnose and downy mildew. It is well suited to temperate areas with moderate to high rainfall and tolerates more soil acidity and imperfect drainage than alfalfa.

In cover-crop rotations, Red Clover protects soil, adds nitrogen-rich residue, and produces flowers that support bees and other beneficial insects. Its combination of leafy growth and regrowth potential also makes it useful for forage and spring hay. Nitrogen contribution varies with nodulation, stand density, fertility, moisture, and how much plant material is returned to the soil.

Sow into a prepared seedbed with good seed-to-soil contact and dependable establishment moisture. Manage cutting or grazing so plants retain enough leaf area to recover, and terminate before mature seed develops where volunteers are not wanted. This seed is Nitrocoated with compatible Rhizobium bacteria, so no additional inoculant is necessary.

  • Scientific Name: Trifolium pratense
  • Growth Habit: Cool-season, short-lived perennial legume
  • Application Rate: 15–20 lb per acre
  • Inoculant: No additional inoculant is needed. The seed is already coated with compatible Rhizobium bacteria to support nodulation and nitrogen fixation.
  • Germination: Approximately 5–10 days under suitable conditions
  • Plant Height: Approximately 18–24 inches
  • Uses: Nitrogen fixation, forage, spring hay, erosion control, green manure, and beneficial-insect habitat
  • Site Adaptation: Tolerates moderately acidic soil and poorer drainage better than alfalfa
  • Management: Allow sufficient regrowth after cutting or grazing and prevent mature seed formation where volunteers are undesirable
