A rare Breton folk art hanging cutlery holder dating from the late 19th century. Hand-carved from dense hardwood, likely oak or chestnut, it retains its original iron hanging chain and has developed a beautifully deep, almost ebony patina through generations of use. The practical multi-compartment body is enriched with turned balusters and boldly carved portrait busts, centred by a larger double-sided figure depicting a bearded man on one side and a woman on the other, elevating this humble household object into a striking work of folk sculpture. The four corner figures appear to represent historical French rulers, their varied headwear recalling monarchs and the two Napoleons, adding another layer of narrative interest.
