Rhipsalis heteroclada - Forest Cactus

Rhipsalis heteroclada, commonly known as the Forest Cactus, is an unusual trailing cactus with slender, branching green stems that create a soft, cascading appearance as the plant matures. Unlike traditional desert cacti, Rhipsalis naturally grows in tropical forests, making it a fantastic choice for hanging pots, shelves and bright rooms with a little extra humidity.

Origin
Native to Brazil, where it grows as an epiphyte on trees in warm, humid tropical forests.

Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some gentle morning or evening sunlight, but avoid prolonged strong midday sun, which can scorch the stems.

Water
Water when the top few centimetres of soil have dried, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. As a forest cactus, it prefers more consistent moisture than a desert cactus, but should never be left sitting in water. Reduce watering during winter when growth slows.

Humidity
Prefers moderate to high humidity and appreciates more humid conditions than most desert cacti. Average household humidity is generally suitable, although it will particularly enjoy a bright bathroom or kitchen.

Soil
Use a loose, well-draining growing medium that retains a little moisture. A cactus and succulent compost mixed with orchid bark and perlite works well.

Food
Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant or cactus fertiliser diluted to half strength. Reduce feeding during autumn and winter.

Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 18–27°C. Protect from cold draughts and avoid prolonged temperatures below 10°C.

Pet-safe
Rhipsalis species are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Remember that Rhipsalis heteroclada is a tropical forest cactus rather than a desert cactus. Allow the top of the soil to dry slightly between waterings, but don’t leave it completely dry for extended periods. A hanging pot or high shelf is ideal for showing off its cascading growth.

Extras
As the plant matures, its branching stems can form a dense, trailing display. Mature plants may also produce small pale flowers followed by berry-like fruits.
