Senna polyphylla (Cassia polyphylla) – Desert Cassia Plant

Bright Yellow Flowers on a Compact, Gracefully Spreading Form

Senna polyphylla (Cassia polyphylla), commonly known as Desert Cassia or Desert Senna, is an attractive shrub or small tree belonging to the Fabaceae family. Native to the Caribbean, parts of Mexico, Central America, Venezuela and eastern Brazil, it is valued as an ornamental plant for its compact, somewhat weeping form, fine pinnate foliage and bright yellow flowers.

The plant typically develops a small, spreading form and can reach approximately 2–3.6 metres in height under suitable conditions, with a spread of around 1.8–3 metres. Its leaves are made up of numerous small leaflets, commonly arranged in 3–15 pairs, giving the foliage a delicate, fine-textured appearance. The plant produces attractive yellow, five-petaled flowers in small clusters along the branches, followed by flattened, slightly curved dark brown pods. Its moderate size and fine foliage also make it suitable for large containers and bonsai-style cultivation.

Environment

Sunlight: Grows best in full sunlight, with around 6 hours or more of good direct light supporting healthy growth and flowering. Provide sufficient open space around the plant to allow its spreading form to develop naturally.

Watering: Water regularly while the plant is establishing and during hot or dry periods. Once established, it is relatively drought tolerant, but regular moisture during active growth supports healthier foliage and flowering. Avoid prolonged waterlogging.

Soil: Adaptable to a range of well-drained soils, including sandy to clay loam. Good drainage is important, particularly when the plant is grown in containers.

Fertilizer: Feed periodically during active growth with a balanced fertilizer to support healthy foliage and flowering. An occasional application of well-decomposed organic matter can also help maintain soil fertility.
