Set of Four Antique French Pharmacy Bottles in Varying Sizes - 11"

This graduated set of four French apothecary jars, dating to around 1900, features cylindrical clear-glass bodies with painted tin lids banded in gilt. Each jar retains its original paper label, set on the inside of the glass and framed within a gilt and charcoal border that echoes the tones of the lids. The inscriptions translate to: Liquorice Powder, Vichy Mint Tablets, Gum Tragacanth, and Compound Melissa Spirit. The glass remains bright and clean, with no cracks or chips observed. The labels show expected age-related wear, including losses, foxing, and abrasion, while the lids display scuffing and scattered oxidation.

 Such jars were standard fittings in pharmacies, where rows of labelled vessels created an orderly visual inventory for both display and storage. The contents indicated by the labels evoke period remedies and confections: liquorice for soothing the throat; gum tragacanth as a thickener and binder; melissa spirit, a calming digestif also known as Carmelite water; and Vichy mint tablets for digestion.
