Set of Three Venetian Carnival Leather Masks on Stands from the Early 20th Century

A set of three Venetian carnival masks in moulded leather, early 20th century, Venice. The group comprises a vivid crimson long-beaked mask with deeply modelled brows, a charcoal black mask with a pronounced hooked nose and deeply furrowed, frowning forehead, and an ivory-toned full-face mask. Each retains the firm, sculptural character of hardened leather and is presented on later custom iron stands for display. The ensemble survives in very good condition with an attractive timeworn patina.

Rooted in the theatrical language of Commedia dell’arte and the long-standing traditions of the Venice Carnival, such masks were designed to transform identity through exaggerated silhouette and expression. Artisans softened vegetable-tanned hides, pressing them over carved wooden forms before tinting, waxing, and burnishing the surface. Once dried, the leather hardened into a rigid structure capable of holding crisp planes and dramatic features, qualities that make surviving leather examples especially prized. Together, these masks carry the intrigue of Venetian carnival culture, suggesting disguise, mystery, and lived history.

Displayed as a trio, they create a striking sculptural vignette, their bold profiles and contrasting tones bringing drama and historical character to a console, study, or library shelf.
