True to its name, Solidago rugosa 'Fireworks' produces a dazzling cascade of slender yellow 30-36" flower spikes in late summer and early fall. In a five-year trial of Goldenrods at the Chicago Botanic Garden, 'Fireworks' was the top-rated plant overall, showing little evidence of mildew or rust and making a slowly expanding clump. It also took the top spot in Mt. Cuba Center’s recent, three-year Solidago trial. Follow Nature's example and combine it with Asters and Daisies. A good cut flower also.
This group of hardy herbaceous plants is largely native to North America. It has generally been overlooked by American gardeners, who scorn its common, roadside upbringing and fear weedy looks and invasive behavior. But Goldenrods offer lavish displays in shades of yellow and gold at a time when many other border plants are flagging. And among the genus are a number of plants that are well behaved and suitable for life in the border.
