Sunflower Brown Eyed Girl

Sunflower ‘Brown Eyed Girl’ is a compact, multi-branching sunflower that produces abundant, golden-yellow blooms with a rich mahogany-red halo surrounding a dark brown center. Unlike traditional annual sunflowers, this variety is a sterile hybrid, meaning it does not set seed, allowing it to continuously bloom from spring to fall. It is highly attractive to pollinators, including bees and butterflies.

Native Range

Sunflowers (Helianthus annuus) are native to North America, particularly the central and western United States. However, ‘Brown Eyed Girl’ is a cultivated hybrid developed for extended blooming and sterile flowers.

Growing Requirements

Light

• Prefers full sun (at least 6-8 hours per day)

• More sun leads to better blooming and stronger growth

Soil

• Well-draining, loamy or sandy soil

• Prefers neutral to slightly acidic soil (pH 6.0-7.5)

• Avoid heavy clay or overly rich soils

Watering

• Water moderately until established

• Once established, it is drought-tolerant but benefits from deep watering in dry periods

• Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot

Fertilization

• A light application of balanced fertilizer (10-10-10) in early spring can encourage strong growth

• Avoid excessive nitrogen, which promotes foliage over flowers

Pruning & Maintenance

• Deadheading is not required since this variety does not set seed
