Tall Artisanal Mead Pitcher Inspired by Antique Apothecary Vessels - 16¼"

This generous antique mead pitcher is hand-thrown in glazed earthenware and inspired by 18th-century pharmacy vessels, with a form adapted from the traditional chevrette, characterized by its rounded body, high-set spout and loop handle. Entirely handmade, it is painted by hand on a tin-glazed surface, with the word HYDROMEL (mead) prominently inscribed across the front and framed by cobalt-blue foliate scrolls and small yellow floral accents on a soft white ground. Visible throwing rings, slight irregularities in the form, glaze pitting and scattered firing speckles give the surface a lively artisanal texture. There is light rubbing to the decoration and glaze, together with a small chip to the base, but overall wear remains minor and consistent with age.

Mead is one of the oldest known fermented drinks, made from honey and water, and it has remained in production from antiquity to the present day. In France, Brittany and Alsace were among the regions where traditions of honey-based drinks endured. Hydromel also has a long connection with medicine and pharmacy: preparations of honey and water appeared in pharmacopoeias and were historically valued for their therapeutic properties. This makes the adaptation of a traditional apothecary vessel particularly fitting for a mead pitcher, even if its role today is more likely at the apéritif than in the pharmacy.
