The Variegated Devil's Backbone, also known as the Variegated Zig-Zag Plant or Devil's Backbone, is an eye-catching, unique succulent that brings structural interest and bright color to any collection. It is named for its thick, woody, zig-zagging stems that resemble a backbone. The 'Variegata' cultivar features fleshy, pointed leaves edged in creamy white or pink, which often turn a bright pink or red when exposed to strong light or cooler temperatures.![]()
Like all plants in the Euphorbia genus, the Variegated Devil's Backbone contains a milky white latex sap that is toxic if ingested.

Bright light to direct sun is best, especially for the variegated form. Strong light encourages the bright pink/red blushing on the leaves and helps maintain a compact, upright shape.![]()
Drought tolerant. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water sparingly, especially during the dormant winter months.![]()
Requires extremely well-draining soil, similar to what you would use for cacti and other succulents.![]()
