Whimsical Painted Sheet-Metal Plant Stand, c. 1970s - 56"

A distinctive painted sheet-metal plant stand, probably dating from the 1970s. Handmade in the form of an oversized flower, it rises on a slender, gently undulating stem from a simple three-footed base. The upper section is composed of layered metal petals, painted in softened shades of blue, cream, and green. The pronounced craquelure is not the result of age but a hand-painted decorative effect, drawn over the colored surface to give the petals greater depth and a deliberately weathered character. Light wear and small areas of oxidation are consistent with age and add to the handmade character of the piece. 

Its exaggerated floral form and playful palette place it firmly within the decorative language of the 1970s, when botanical motifs and sculptural furniture were widely embraced. The flower head can hold a plant, large candle, or compact lamp, while the long sinuous stem and oversized bloom give the piece a whimsical, almost surreal presence. It works especially well in a corner or among plants, bringing height, movement, and the character of an object that sits between functional furniture and decorative sculpture.
