Whirlpool Plant - Petrocosmea 'HT-2' - Welsh Grown

The name of the Whirlpool Plant comes from its spiralling growth pattern, where each new leaf sprouts from the centre and each helps to form a spiral pattern as they grow. Bell-shaped pale purple flowers will sprout from between the layers of velvety leaves if the plant is happy and thriving, and the colours contrast perfectly together and amongst your houseplant display. Due to its liking for high-humidity environments, it does well in larger terrarium setups, adding structure and texture to your glass-enclosed greenery.

Origin
This Genus is native to east Asia, ranging from the east Himalayas to China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam

Light
Bright but indirect light is best. Your Whirlpool may scorch in too much intense direct sun, so find a balance between this and shade (too much of which can stunt the growth) for best results.

Water
Your Whirlpool will do best with its soil consistently moist, so make sure not to let the whole lot dry between waters. It's probably easiest to bottom-water this one, popping it in a tray of water and allowing it to soak it up, to avoid getting the crown of the leaves too wert and risking rot.

Humidity
Higher humidity is great; make sure this plant is away from any heaters which will dry it out too quickly. Aim for humidity levels between 60-80% - a large terrarium can be ideal for this.

Soil
Use a mix that drains well whilst retaining plenty of moisture. A mix of elements like coir and perlite to balance these two attributes should work well here. Repot in spring, every few years once the roots have outgrown each pot.

Food
Don't overdo the fertiliser for this slow grower; just a little feed every six weeks or so will do. If you're struggling to get flowers, a feed higher in potassium can be helpful to encourage blooms.

Temperature
7-15°C temperatures are perfect for this houseplant; it will do fine at warmer temperatures but be careful not to let it dry out too quickly in this warmer environment.

Pet-safe
Yes - non-toxic, so it is safe for your furry friends, though still not advisable to be chomped in large quantities.
