Large French Renaissance-Inspired Apothecary Jar by Léon Warin c.1970 - 17"

A large and handsome mid-20th-century lidded ceramic pharmacy jar, hand-painted in rich cobalt blue on a soft white ground and signed under the base by Léon Warin. The urn-shaped body rises on a flared pedestal foot and is crowned with a domed cover, while sculptural mask handles punctuate the shoulders. Scrolling foliage and rhythmic borders frame a central cartouche inscribed Mononatrii carbonas, the Latin pharmaceutical name for sodium carbonate, a substance used in European apothecaries since at least the 17th century. The Latin inscription and the jar’s classical form reference Renaissance pharmacy models, with the pedestal base, scrollwork, and symmetrical handles echoing Italian and French maiolica of the 16th and 17th centuries. 

Generous in scale and classical in character, it brings a refined, scholarly note to a dining room dresser, bathroom shelf, or library bookcase. Display it on its own for a composed focal point, or pair it with other pharmacy jars for a collected look.
