Large Green-Glazed Terracotta Olive Jar From Tornac Circa 1900 - 28¾"

This large French olive jar (or olivette) in green-glazed terracotta comes from Tornac in southeastern France and dates to the late 19th to early 20th century. The grand, tapering ovoid body rises to a collared, slightly everted rim and rests on a molded pedestal foot. The surface is covered in a deep bottle-green glaze with attractive runs and pooling, while areas of exposed clay show through from wear. Scattered glaze losses, small rim nicks, and surface abrasions add to its timeworn, authentic charm. The base, which is unpierced, has been restored. Made for curing and storing olives and other provisions, olive jar from the Languedoc were wheel-thrown in sections and finished with a vernissé glaze tinted with copper oxide to seal the clay.

Workshops around Tornac and nearby Anduze supplied farmsteads across southern France well into the early 20th century. Their practical forms and robust bodies reflected regional craftsmanship. The unpierced base confirms this jar’s original function as a storage vessel rather than a planter, while the tall profile provided generous capacity yet remained manageable in handling.

This piece brings earthy Mediterranean color and sculptural presence to an entry, kitchen, or garden room. It may be used as a striking vessel for dried branches, olive cuttings, or umbrellas, or placed beside a fireplace to soften a stone surround.
