Late 19th Century French Neo-Renaissance Display Vitrine - 83" x 32¾"

This tall French display cabinet in the Neo-Renaissance taste, dating to the late 19th century, presents a striking combination of architectural presence and finely executed carving. Designed as a two-part cabinet, the upper glazed vitrine rests above a lower section with a shallow frieze drawer and paneled two-door cupboard. Crafted from mixed woods and later stripped to reveal their contrasting tones, the piece now shows a harmonious pale, honeyed surface. The projecting cornice features a bold foliate frieze, set above a frame enriched with classical ornament, while the lower doors are adorned with raised cartouches. Notably, the door handles take the form of projecting carved heads, lending the cabinet a sculptural, characterful presence.

Stripping has revealed age marks and scattered ancient wormholes, which add to its authenticity. The carving shows softened edges with small chips, and there are minor darkened marks. The interior retains its original crimson silk lining to the back and shelves, a luxurious detail thought heavily worn with time. The lower body has a restored floor and is missing its interior shelf.

In the Neo-Renaissance style revived with vigor during the Second Empire (1852-1870), this masterwork cabinet showcases a cabinetmaker’s skill in carving, proportion, and construction.
