Lupinus 'Noble Maiden'

Lupinus 'Noble Maiden' displays a rich blend of sweetly-scented ivory and pure white flowers with the tiniest hint of cream. Plant it in drifts and let the well-filled spires mingle with Iris, Allium, and other sun-loving perennials. Part of the Russell Hybrids 'Band of Nobles' series.

Lupine Russell hybrids are legendary. They were developed by George Russell of Yorkshire, who, as a railroad guard at a quiet crossing, worked out their great flowers, now grown all over the world in temperate climates. The flower spikes are 10–12" long, on stems that can reach 30" tall. If grown in an exposed area, stems may benefit from staking. Plants look best in bold groups. Difficult in areas where summer nights remain extremely hot. Makes an excellent winter annual in the Deep South

We love growing Lupines for their spikes of tall, colorful summer flowers. This North American native variety thrives and reseeds in sandy soils that do not have a lot of nutrients. Try planting it with Little Bluestem which likes the same growing conditions. If you have rich garden soil, this species is unlikely to overwinter but may leave seedlings for next year as long as spent flowers are not deadheaded after bloom. Once established, Lupines are deer-resistant, and will attract pollinators in late spring and early summer.
