Pair of Hand-Worked French Green-Painted Wire Hanging Jardinières / Baskets, circa 1950 - 38¼"

A graceful pair of French hanging jardinières, likely dating from the 1950s, crafted from hand-worked iron wire and retaining their original or early green-painted finish. The open baskets are formed from crossed wirework with a lively sequence of loops around the rim and base, while three larger hand-shaped links give the finer suspension chains a distinctive rhythm. Small crown-like wirework collars finish the upper sections, leading to generous integrated hooks that make the jardinières easy to suspend from beams, branches or garden structures. The green-painted surface has weathered beautifully, with pale abrasion, exposed metal and areas of oxidation giving the wirework a rustic patina.  

The rhythm of the metalwork is especially effective as a pair, with repeated diamonds, loops and differently scaled chain links creating a lively yet balanced composition.  Suspended indoors or out, the jardinières bring height and movement with an airy, graceful presence, remaining visually engaging even when unplanted. They can be used for plants as intended or repurposed as suspended baskets for fruit, vegetables or household essentials in a pantry, kitchen or bathroom.
