Rain Lily 'Madame Butterfly' is a graceful bulbous perennial from the Amaryllidaceae family, native to South America. It forms compact clumps of narrow, glossy green foliage, with slender flower stems rising among the leaves. Like other Rain Lilies, its flowers are encouraged by increased moisture and humidity, making it particularly attractive during the monsoon season. Its neat growth habit makes it suitable for containers, borders, rock gardens, and naturalised planting.

Madame Butterfly produces elegant, open flowers with soft pink to rosy-pink petals and subtle lighter streaking. The blooms have a delicate star-like form, with a gentle yellowish-green glow around the throat that contrasts beautifully with the pink petals. Individual flowers remain open for only a few days, but successive blooms can appear during the growing season, particularly following rainfall or thorough watering. In Indian conditions, it flowers from June to September in plains and from July to October in hilly regions.

Environment

Sunlight: Grows well in full sun to partial shade and can also tolerate some dappled or afternoon shade, particularly in hot climates. Good light supports healthy foliage and flowering.

Watering: Rain Lilies can tolerate short periods of dryness, but flowering is often triggered by a thorough soaking or increased moisture during the warm season. Keep the soil moderately moist during active growth while avoiding prolonged waterlogging.

Soil: Adaptable to average to rich garden soil and can tolerate a range of drainage conditions. For container cultivation, use a fertile, well-draining growing medium that retains some moisture without becoming soggy.

Fertilizer: Rain Lilies generally require little feeding. A light application of compost before the growing season can improve soil fertility and support healthy growth and flowering.
